Plastrum introduces a new sugarcane-based packaging range to the Baltics

Plastrum is introducing a new packaging range to the Baltic market, made from sugarcane fibre — an agricultural by-product that would otherwise go to waste. It offers a sustainable alternative to conventional single-use food packaging, primarily for the food service and retail sectors.

The suitability of sugarcane-fibre packaging for hot or cold food depends on the specific product. Compostability must be checked against the certification for the complete packaging and the conditions it specifies; plant-based raw material alone does not demonstrate that packaging will break down in the natural environment. This makes it an attractive option for brands seeking to reduce the environmental footprint of their packaging without compromising product quality.

Why sugarcane?

Using sugarcane fibre, or bagasse, as a packaging material gives a second life to material that would otherwise be waste from the sugar industry. Unlike wood fibre, sugarcane does not require additional tree felling and has a much shorter growing cycle. The result is a strong material with compostable options suitable for food-contact applications, subject to the product-specific documentation described above.

Who is this range for?

The new range is aimed primarily at cafés, catering companies, food manufacturers and retailers looking for sustainable alternatives to boxes, plates and other disposable food containers. Suitability for hot food, cold food and microwave use must be confirmed for the specific product.

Focus: the Baltics

Plastrum is launching the new sugarcane-based packaging range first in the Baltic markets, where interest in sustainable food packaging has grown noticeably in recent years.
